Sulgrave Manor House

The ancestral home of the Washingtons in Britain

Sulgrave Manor is a small manor-house, built by a Lancashireman born at Warton about 1500. The farmhouse that was bought in 1914 was smaller than the house that Lawrence Washington built.

The parts which remain of his house are to the south, the porch and screens passage and the Great Hall on the ground floor, the Great Chamber and two smaller rooms above. Today there is a west wing, containing the Director's quarters, constructed at the restoration completed in 1929.

George Washington

The Sulgrave Manor Board is a registered charity whose mission is to be “a centre from which sentiments of friendship and goodwill between the British and American peoples will for ever radiate”.

The charity is based at Sulgrave Manor in Northamptonshire, an Elizabethan manor house built on monastic land bought by Lawrence Washington from Henry VIII.  Lawrence’s great great grandson John settled in Virginia in 1656 and John’s great grandson George became the first President of the United States of America.

The Sulgrave Manor is also renowned for it’s garden – it is a lavish garden designed to fit in with the House. The orchard boasts an ancient Loddington Apple Tree & there are different garden trails for children.

The lovely gardens include herbaceous borders, an Elizabethan knot garden with traditional herbs and an orchard, underplanted with thousands of daffodils. Lawns, yew hedges and topiary complete the gardens. Herbs and unusual perennials are sold in the Courtyard from Easter to September.
